#LVT makes a predictable appearance here.
This would be a brilliant reversal, and could be combined with an #LVT to increase funding.
A tax on unleased land larger than 1/4 acre and not owned by a public Trust would pretty much spare all domestic housing and farming activities from tax while removing the incentive for land banking and hereditary land ownership.

@johannab I would argue that #UBI should be separate from allocations for healthcare, education, and possibly even housing, because it's obvious that some people will choose to spend their UBI unwisely, so we should at least ensure these common goods.
As for how to pay for it, I argue that #LVT #LandValueTax as the #SingleTax is the right way. We don't need to muck about with income taxes, estate taxes, or anything else (other than pollution taxes).
I disgree that children should get less.
Kesah Ram Hinsdale is one of the most likely to replace #BeccaBalint in the #USHouse, once the seat held by #BernieSanders is vacated in 2030, if not before.
She's wise to oppose. H.772 benefits landlords at the expense of everyone else, as if landlords aren't already the ones holding almost all of the power in #Vermont.
There is no worse thing you can be in this world than a landlord. Abolish them! Tax leeches out of existence! Confiscate rent!
This is, in fact, the entire point of #LVT #LandValueTaxation. We tax the unimproved value of the land, not the capital improvments (the building values).
This incentivizes the holders of the most valuable lands, which are always the population centers, where competition for the use of land is highest, to build more building units on smaller plots.
This lowers the cost of living and the cost of doing business, attracting people to move downtown, rather than replace farms with housing.
Every word of Prof. Murphy's presentation here is equally applicable to the US.
Nine letters in three acronyms would utterly transform human civilization: #LVT #UBI #MMT.
We could do this virtually overnight, if we could just convince people of the truth of how economies actually function.

We do not need and should not have progressive property taxes. #PropertyTaxes are by their very nature progressive, to begin with, since you are taxed on the assessed value of the property. Wealthy people own the most property, and all the most expensive property.
What we need is to move property taxes away from taxing capital improvements and toward taxing unimproved land values only. That is the most progressive possible form of #taxation. #LVT #LandValueTax
