World’s carbon budget will be exhausted in three years - report

The rate of human-induced warming remains at an all-time high, according to the latest Indicators of Global Climate Change report.

@PIK_climate A budget until 2030 sounds weirdly optimistic.

First, this is on a global scale. Germany had already exhausted its share of the 1.5 degree budget in 2022, according to the latest (2025) calculations: https://www.umweltrat.de/SharedDocs/Downloads/DE/04_Stellungnahmen/2024_2028/2025_10_BVerfG.html (see page 7 in the PDF)

It's probably similar in other western/northern countries.

Second, the idea of a carbon budget for 1.5 degrees already includes the assumption that a lot of the CO2 that is currently in the atmosphere will be captured and stored, with a negative budget after 2050. This is a huge bet on technology that still doesn't exist.

Third, it's kind of weird to talk about remaining CO2 budgets when we already measure temperatures over 1.5 and it's accelerating.

Keine Pointe. Kein Shitstorm. Business as usual. Vorbild? Pustekuchen!

The Carbon Budget Petition. We need to get half our cars off gas, half our buildings off gas and cut all industrial emissions in half, including the oil sands. We have all the technology, and some of it is even cheaper than gas. All we are missing is political leadership. Help to pressure the Canadian government by signing the Parliamentary Petition. #CarbonBudget #greenhousegas #cleanenergy

How do mesoscale #eddies shape the Southern Ocean #CarbonBudget? 🌊🌀

The Southern Ocean takes up about a quarter of anthropogenic CO₂. A 27-yr eddy resolving simulation conducted by Salinas-Matus et al. shows anticyclonic eddies to be most efficient at absorbing atmospheric CO₂, while cyclones & peripheries are weaker. These eddies cause daily & seasonal variability and act as overall carbon sinks, contributing ~10 % of total uptake & ~1 % of anomalous uptake.🔍

The richest 1% have exhausted their annual carbon budget – the amount of CO2 that can be emitted while staying within 1.5 degrees of warming – only ten days into the year, according to new analysis from Oxfam. The richest 0.1% already used up their carbon limit on the 3rd January.
