De komende weken ondergaan ze een spectaculaire metamorfose: ze groeien poten, verliezen hun staart en verlaten uiteindelijk het water. Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris) is a member of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) and grows in wetlands. It is pollinated by numerous insects.

All members of this family contain the toxin protoanemonin, which can cause rashes and blisters on skin or more severe effects if ingested raw.

The plant is edible if the young greens are cooked, which neutralizes the toxins and it was called "Cowslip" in earlier eras.
