These little ones earned their place! 🌱 These Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) seedlings spent their entire first winter outside, exposed to frost and cold just like the adult plants. And they made it! Already producing their first proper traps, complete with those characteristic interlocking teeth. Growing carnivorous plants from seed takes patience — it can be years before they reach full size — but watching them push through their first dormancy is incredibly rewarding.

Deze kleintjes hebben het verdiend! 🌱 Deze zaailingen van de Venus vliegenval (Dionaea muscipula) hebben hun eerste volledige winter buiten doorgebracht, blootgesteld aan vorst en kou net als de volwassen planten. En ze hebben het overleefd! Ze maken al hun eerste echte vallen, compleet met de karakteristieke tanden. One of the first splashes of colour in the garden this year — my early-flowering rhododendron (Rhododendron mucronulatum) is in full bloom, and it never gets old. 🌸
This species is one of the earliest rhododendrons to flower, often blooming before the leaves even appear. The vivid magenta-pink flowers stand out all the more against the bare branches of the still-sleeping garden. An important early nectar source for the first bumblebees and solitary bees venturing out on warmer days.

Another surprise from the firewood pile — the caterpillar of a Poplar Grey moth (Acronicta megacephala), curled up under the bark. 🐛
This vivid lime-green caterpillar with yellow segment lines is surprisingly hard to spot on foliage, despite its bright color. The larvae feed on poplar, willow and aspen, and when fully grown they pupate hidden under bark or in crevices in wood — exactly where I found this one. A beautiful example of how much life is hidden in a simple pile of logs.

Nog een verrassing uit de houtstapel — de rups van de agaatvlinder (Acronicta megacephala), opgerold onder de schors. 🐛
Deze felgroene rups met gele segmentlijnen is verrassend moeilijk te spotten tussen bladeren, ondanks zijn opvallende kleur. De larven leven op populier, wilg en ratelpopulier, en als ze volgroeid zijn verpoppen ze zich verborgen onder schors of in spleten in hout — precies waar ik deze vond. Een mooi voorbeeld van hoeveel leven er schuilt in een simpele houtstapel.
