Turns out tomato sex is the reason we have one of life’s greatest foods: the modern potato. They’re hybrids of tomatoes and a non-tuberous potato ancestor called Solanum Etuberosum.

Autumn, and yet: still hundreds more to harvest. These were green early September, and some have been ripening – on the plants – every week since; we’ve been picking them every weekend. Given that frosts are far away and the plants are alive, there’s a chance we’ll be picking tomatoes into November, here in Cambridge, UK.

And so the season ends. I’ve picked the last of the tomatoes with the plants now on the compost heap and the contents of the pots on the veg beds.

The green fruit will ripen in the kitchen. It’s not as good as sun ripened but still better than bought. We’re usually eating homegrown tomatoes right up until Christmas.

After the utter failure of last year, the Romas have paid off. These look really good. The cherry tomatoes, we agree, need to not be repeated, as nobody we know actually eats them. Those are the tomato trees which have literally taken over the porch and front steps.

But these are great.

It is also October. These didn't bother showing up all summer.
