New Statesman | Thatcherism is still the problem by Ben Glover

As each week passes, a new theory of Labour’s trouble emerges. It’s the comms. The values. The vibes. The policies. The leaflets. The tweets. The TikToks. While there is some truth to these critiques, they fail to explain why the party’s time in office has been so bumpy. The problem runs deeper – and further back – than many in the party are willing to admit.

This starts with the party’s “problem statement”, to use the jargon of management consultants – who will tell you that every plan has to start with one, including programmes for office. Problem statements are by their nature time-bound: if you go to the doctor with an ailment, they will always ask: “When did your symptoms begin?”

For many in Labour, the answer is the financial crisis of 2007-08. It’s too often presumed that our politics was “normal” and the country was on a good course until the crash. And that after that, things got weird – leading to Brexit and other undesirable outcomes. But what if this diagnosis is mistaken? What if the crisis didn’t create our problems, but merely accelerated them? And what if the real turning point came with the continuation of Thatcherism under Blair?

@remixtures This wealth gap was created due to #Reaganomics and #Thatcherism. It has been exacerbated by all presidents since then, #Democrats and #Republicans, alike. 40+ years of #neoliberal economic policy has resulted in a wealth transfer from the poor, middle class to the millionaires and billionaires. Where #Dow and #FTSE were the gods on whose altar wealth of middle class and affordability were slaughtered in hopes of #TrickleDownEconomics.

The reckoning is over due.

A few weeks back, I was in Malmö where I gave a talk on The Miners Strike of1984-85. I attempted to contextualise the year long dispute, how it came about and the social and political consequences in the aftermath, some of which are still being felt today.

The good people at SIGNAL audio recorded my talk and huge thanks go to them for having me speak and the images shown below are theirs.

Thatcher’s legacy caused inequality and service cuts; Tory ‘evolution’ deepens Britain’s crisis.

Examining the Decline and Future of Centre-Right Politics in Britain

Thatcher’s betrayal reshaped Tory politics, crushing worker solidarity and privatizing gains. Labour’s steady pace contrasts with the Tories’ decay, but real change means breaking capitalism’s grip, not just reforming it.

True, Thatcher’s ghost still haunts the party. The Tories traded principles for profit, leaving a hollow shell chasing nostalgia. Labour’s rise isn’t strength—it’s vacuum. Until the centre-right rebuilds around integrity instead of ideology, Britain’s political balance will keep rotting from the ins...

That's rubbish. Thatcher saved Britain from socialist ruin and unleashed economic growth. Public services suffer because of Labour’s mismanagement, not Tory policies. The centre-right isn’t crumbling; it’s evolving and will expose Labour’s failures soon enough.

Totally agree. Thatcher's policies ripped the heart out of the Tories, leaving them chasing cash over principles. Public services are in shambles, and Labour's just picking up the pieces. The centre-right's lost its way, and I doubt they’ll find it anytime soon.
