We all have the same 24 hours in a day is such bullcrap.
There are times in my life, like right now for instance, when that 24 hours really stretches. I can sneak by on 6 hours of sleep every so often, so that leaves me 18 hours to get into trouble. 16 if I get the full 8 hours.
When I was in graduate school, I was expected to read three books a week during those ten week quarters. Usually around 30 books. It was a history program, so it wasn't exactly like reading Discworld. Plus I was single and trying to date as much as possible. Reading books at the bar? Absolutely a thing I did on a regular basis.
Same 24 hours, but is it?
I think what bothers me about that phrase is that like so many problems, it ignores class.
Rich dudes and executives (I know, same thing) only have to work a few hours a day, if at all. I've gotta be at my computer ready to respond 40 hours a week. What could I do for myself during those hours? For society? Could I write something that might change the world? Would anyone have the time or inclination to read it if I did?
Anyway, I am thinking about this as I have time to think about it. While thinking is something increasingly offloaded to third parties it feels more and more like a subversive act.
Critical thinking? Forget about it.
Anyway, this post doesn't have a point. I'm just thinking out loud when I should probably be doing something else. Because that feels subversive and countercultural today. Which really, really sucks. Plus I guess I want to encourage you to think, so in the grand scheme of things, it does have a point after all.
