A couple of days ago I read that a person well known to the West is now a trillionaire. At first, this filled me with sadness, and I found myself thinking that this is a failure of our species. Soon, however, I remembered that rather than a failure of humanity, this is the failure of one specific economic-political system, itself created by one specific culture, one specific group of people. And this gave me hope… again.

We talk about revolutions through simplified stories: heroes, villains, success, failure.

But real change is shaped by deeper forces - history, economics, ideology, institutions, culture, and the material conditions people are living through.

Often we fall back on comfortable liberal assumptions and narratives instead of asking harder questions about why movements emerge, how they transform, and why their outcomes become something different from their original hopes.

A better analysis needs more mess, not less.

Any understanding of change means looking beyond the slogans and into the systems that shape what becomes possible.

Watching this video reminded me how much activist history gets distorted by sectarianism.

At places like #Greenham, divisions formed around the "colour" of the gates - different ideologies, identities, and political cultures. The trouble is that the loudest and most conflict-driven voices end up telling the history afterwards.

The people saying *"look at me"* get remembered, while the people saying *"don't look at me, I'm busy, look at the issue"* are usually too busy doing the actual work to document it.

This leaves us with a skewed activist memory, where internal drama becomes history and the slow, collective labour that made things happen fades into the background.

It's not just a problem of the past. We keep reproducing the same mess today.
