A wally close is a tiled a commununal stairwell a Glasgow tenement, with the word wally being a Scots word for anything made from ceramics or china. This can include wally dugs (china dogs), and wallies (or false teeth). This, in itself, is derived from an older meaning of anything fancy, splendid or highly decorative.

This is something I'd like to see rolled out across the rest of Glasgow as it makes a big difference to the local streetscape and helps highlight the city's amazing architecture, which is all to often overwhelmed by modern shopfronts. It would also give Glasgow a much more distinctive and unique feel to its streets.

Traditional shopfronts on the ground floor of a tenement building in the Govan area of Glasgow. These have been created with funding from the Traditional Shop Front Improvement Scheme, which provided money to help shops update their shopfronts so they were more in keeping with the rest of the building.
