Winecup Clarkia

Notes:

All Clarkia are self-compatible. The main pollinators of the genus are bees and syrphid flies,

Clarkia purpurea often has a compact habit so might work as an annual bedding plant.

According to Plants for a Future, the seed is slightly edible and can be made into piñole.

Clarkia purpurea Winecup clarkia PFAF Plant Database

Clarkia purpurea is a ANNUAL growing to 0.6 m (2ft). The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs). Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

Today in the forest I was never aware of the rain, til I hanged all my affairs for drying. Workday even started well: a lone cricket was singing, bands of red kite were heading south in a temporarily blue sky. I had just the time to shoot hover flies in dandelions and then again ⛈️

A pair of margined calligraphers (Toxomerus marginatus) from my back yard. They stay attached even when spooked into flight, and I've always assumed both males and females beat their wings. Can anyone confirm? And do they somehow signal to each other their intention to fly? #syrphid #fly #diptera #HoverFly #entomology #nature
@plants @nature late #ThrowbackThursday meets #FlowersOnFriday this is from #May, a mix of #wildflowers and #garden with a bonus #FlowerFly #Syrphid (?) #florespondence #Alberta #pollinators
top L Glechoma hederacea in garden;R wild native Viola nephrophylla; centre wild Caltha palustris (Mollyblobs 😆 ); bottom Rhodiola rosea in the garden, with a jewel like fly. I've been surprised by how big and showy these became after just a couple of years of being tiny seedlings! #RockGarden

Regarding all this news I keep hearing about a "no-fly list": Why would anyone want no flies? I mean, just look at this beautiful calligrapher. Wouldn't your life be a little brighter if it were perched on your finger?

@eyelashbeetl3 @nev don't think so. Looks like a #Syrphid, though there may be more Syrphid like #Pipunculids than I'm aware of - they are very similar.

A dusky-winged hover #fly (Ocyptamus fuscipennis) for #InverteFest . This is the only one of these I've ever seen. He's a beautiful little jewel.
