I used to mow down dandelions at first sight but not anymore!

Before you fire up the lawnmower, remember that dandelions are one of the very first abundant sources of #nectar and #pollen for hungry bees waking up from winter.

I am highly allergic to bees so I try to avoid them. This little guy seemed completely uninterested in me so I snapped a quick pic with my cell. Imagine my surprise to see "pollen pants"! Bright orange pollen packed onto its legs. That is crucial food being carried back to support the hive.

Let them bloom! 💛 #SaveTheBees #Bees #NaturePhotography #Weeds #Dandelion #Appalachia #AndroidPhoto

We had our first nice weekend day, so we removed the sod from the future pollinator garden. This is a progress photo since we finished just after dark, but you get the idea.

The birds were also really happy because they got treated to a grub buffet on our driveway.

How to Create a #PollinatorGarden with Children: Fun Family Activities to Attract Pollinators and Foster a #LoveForNature

by Chloe Wilson, February 12, 2025·

Excerpt: "Another fantastic idea is to create a 'pollinator parade.' Have your children dress up as their favorite pollinators, and then march around the garden! They can flap their arms like butterflies or buzz like bees. This playful activity not only entertains but also helps them remember the importance of these creatures.

"You can incorporate storytelling activities by making up tales about the flowers and the pollinators that visit them. Kids can act out these stories, which fosters their imagination and creativity. This can be a wonderful bonding experience for the whole family.

"Don’t forget about seasonal activities. In spring, you can plant seeds together. In summer, observe which flowers attract the most bees. In fall, collect seeds from your flowers to plant next year. This creates a year-round learning experience that keeps kids engaged in nature."

New growth could be appearing in the next few weeks, depending on coming weather ( a few warm days coming, then more rain and snow...lol) but meantime last year's growth is still delivering in the Xeric/Native Beds (includes some near natives and exotics that fit the habitats) including a cute (very ephemeral) melt pool and a patch of #MarginalGarden #garden

My #DragonLilies are developing new foliage & new stalks have sprouted. They're also known as vampire lily & voodoo lily; in Greece, they're known as #drakondia. #DracunculusVulgaris helps with attracting more pollinators in cultivated gardens with it's unpleasant rotting meat smell, when it flowers.
