A Striated Deer Fly (Chrysops striatus) has a lunch date with my arm as I go about my late morning wetland walk. Deer flies and horseflies can be my nemesis while doing wetland work. I am not too bothered by mosquitoes compared to many, but these flies bite you and then lap up the blood; it is hard not to be bothered by that. #deerflies #flies #wetlands #parasites

Check out this excellent and *stylish* little fly seen today by Irene Apo near Cambridge in NZ.

Steve Kerr from Otago Museum has identified it as the NZ endemic species *Poecilohetaerella antennata*. Not a lot is known about the biology of these.

In my new YouTube #video, I tell the #hypothetical story of a #Histiostomatidae #mite that lived its #lifehistory in the #dung heap of the #dinosaur #Edmontosaurus #annectens during the Late #Cretaceous. It developed #fungivorously within the dung and, when conditions deteriorated, was #transported by #flies to a new habitat (phoresis).
