Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: WEBINAR: “Rights Retention. Be the next mover! How to implement a policy supporting rights retention and open licensing in your institution". After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

"Rights Retention. Be the next mover! How to implement a policy supporting rights retention and open licensing in your institution" is a webinar organized by SPARC Europe in the framework of the Retain project as part of the Knowledge Rights 21 programme. This session aims to empower institutions with the knowledge to craft frameworks for authors’ rights retention, facilitating legal Open Access (OA) publishing. The webinar offers a rare opportunity to compare and contrast rights retention (RR) and open licensing (OL) policies from different countries, shedding light on diverse approaches and their implications. It will present findings and recommendations from the long-awaited SPARC Europe’s report, "Opening Knowledge: Retaining Rights and Open Licensing in Europe." This session will help you grasp the evolving dynamics of European RR and OL policies and learn first-hand from European experts, sharing their experiences, challenges, and success stories in a discussion panel. Whether you are currently shaping RR and OL policies or are new to the field, this webinar is a chance to participate in a thought-provoking dialogue that could redefine your institution's approach to rights retention and open licensing for more OA.

#SPARCEurope recommends that "research and higher education institutions should augment their existing policies with elements calling for rights retention to support immediate Open Access to all types of research scholarly outputs".

49 European research institutions participating in a survey reported to have a rights retention policy in place or in development.

Opening Knowledge: Retaining Rights and Open Licensing in Europe

This report investigates the current landscape of non-legislative policy practices affecting researchers and authors in the authors' rights and licensing domain. It is an outcome of research conducted by Project Retain led by SPARC Europe, as part of the Knowledge Rights 21 programme. The report concludes with a set of recommendations for institutional policymakers, funders and legislators, and publishers.  It is accompanied by the study dataset. This project was funded by Arcadia – a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin

"There are significant variations across the European #repository landscape with differing levels of support and funding…Some repositories have access to the resources they need…while others find it a challenge to maintain up-to-date software platforms and suitable staffing levels. For Europe to maintain its position as a global leader in #OpenScience, we must ensure there is a strong and sustainable network of open repositories."

OpenAIRE, LIBER, SPARC Europe and COAR Launch Joint Strategy to Strengthen the European Repository Network

Open science is ushering in a new paradigm for research; one in which all  researchers have unprecedented access to the full corpus of research for analysis, text and data mining, and other novel research methods. A prerequisite for achieving this vision is a strong and well-functioning network of repositories that provides human and machine access
