Cinque sconfitte su cinque per i tennisti e le tenniste italiane impegnate al Masters 1000 di Madrid, in Spagna. Nel primo giorno di torneo nel tabellone maschile (il secondo per il femminile) dopo le qualificazioni, infatti, nessuno degli azzurri e delle azzurre in campo è riuscito a superare il primo turno. Alcune sconfitte erano preventivabili, altre meno, come quella di Matteo Berrettini contro Dino Prizmic o quella di Elisabetta Cocciaretto contro Alycia Sparks.
Una giornata negativa per il tennis azzurro, cominciata male già con la sconfitta di Mattia Bellucci contro Dzumhur per 2-0 nei set. L’azzurro non è riuscito a superare il bosniaco al termine di un match mai in discussione, chiuso dopo meno di un’ora e mezza. Stessa sorte è toccata sia a Matteo Berrettini che a Lorenzo Sonego, che hanno perso in due set rispettivamente contro Dino Prizmic e Dusan Lajovic, 35enne che sulla terra rossa ha sempre fatto bene e che arriva dalle qualificazioni. Perde anche Federico Cinà: il 19enne azzurro ha ceduto in due set a Elmer Moller, 22enne danese che è in gran forma.
Niente da fare anche nel tabellone femminile, dove Elisabetta Cocciaretto ha perso contro Alycia Sparks, sempre per due set a zero. In serata la sesta e ultima italiana in campo: la giovanissima Tyra Grant affronta Elsa Jacquemot. Le speranze del tennis italiano in questo primo giorno di partite a Madrid sono così affidate alla 18enne, tra i talenti emergenti del tennis in Italia soprattutto a livello femminile.
