È lo stesso Musetti ad annunciare via social che "dopo la partita di ieri mi sono sottoposto ad accertamenti medici che hanno evidenziato una lesione al retto femorale, che mi costringerà ad alcune settimane di riposo e recupero. Purtroppo questo mi impedisce di partecipare ai tornei di Amburgo e al Roland Garros, una notizia che mi pesa enormemente. Grazie di cuore al pubblico di Roma per l'affetto straordinario: è stato il motivo per cui, pur non al 100%, ho voluto scendere in campo e dare tutto nel torneo di casa. Vi terrò aggiornati".
Musetti, destinato a scivolare ancora più indietro nel ranking visto che a Parigi nel 2025 si era spinto fino alla semifinale, ha giocato appena 20 match in questa stagione e ha iniziato a fare i conti con gli infortuni già a Melbourne, quando fu costretto al ritiro nei quarti contro Djokovic. Il toscano era poi rientrato un mese e mezzo dopo a Indian Wells, dove era stato eliminato all'esordio, poi il ritorno in campo ad aprile ottenendo come miglior risultato i quarti a Barcellona.

Per qualità tecniche e interpretazione del match oltre a una percentuale vicino all’80% con le prime palle, Ruud ha gestito il match fin dai primi game, ma Musetti non è mai sembrato in grado di competere a causa dei problemi fisici accusati già contro Cerundolo. Sul 3-0 del secondo set Musetti ha chiesti un medical time out per rendere più stabile la fasciatura alla coscia, ma è servita a poco. Lorenzo Musetti batte il dolore e Francisco Cerundolo ed è il primo italiano a raggiungere gli ottavi degli Internazionali di Roma. Il tennista carrarino ha sconfitto l’argentino in due set con il punteggio di 7-6 6-4 al termine di un match molto tirato, caratterizzato dai continui break e controbreak nel primo set chiuso solo al tredicesimo gioco. Ma l’azzurro ha dovuto sconfiggere anche un problema muscolare alla gamba sinistra, visibilmente fasciata, che gli ha provocato non pochi grattacapi. Tant’è che dopo il match-point è scoppiato in lacrime.
“Fisicamente non ero a posto, il pubblico mi ha aiutato tanto – ha confessato – Ci tengo particolarmente a vincere qui”. Quindi ha spiegato: “Per me contano più partite così rispetto a quelle in cui mi riesce tutto: quello che mi è sempre mancato è vincere quando non gioco il mio miglior tennis, non sono nella migliore condizione fisica e mentale. Sono vittorie che spero possano svoltare una stagione”.
Se è stato così, lo si capirà già dagli ottavi, dove Musetti se la vedrà con Casper Ruud, fresco di vittoria contro Jiri Lehecka in appena 79 minuti. All’azzurro sono invece servite 2 ore e 12 minuti per piegare la resistenza di Cerundolo, in un match tra due terraioli. Non uno spettacolo, va detto. La partita è stata caratterizzata da diversi errori, su entrambi i fronti. Ma la tenacia di “Muso” è stata sufficiente per raggiungere gli ottavi di finale di Roma per la quarta volta in carriera.
