Strawberries grown here in Monifieth, Angus, served with extra thick Scottish cream. Yum. #Scotland #Food #Strawberries #SoftFruit #Angus

Do you like yellow soft fruit? Are you a fan of genre defining 90’s music? Do you hope wistfully for a groundbreaking mashup containing both of these things? Could you be a cartoon supervillain with a cohort of minions?

Why not buy a t-shirt or a sticker!?

Excited about our new #InnovateUK project, FLYTHRIVE, with Olombria, NRI, Asplins and Summerberry Company. Hoverflies are amazing: dual-purpose beneficial insects! They are good little #pollinators, and many species also help control aphids! The larvae of the aphid-eating #hoverflies are voracious little predators that will eat up to a few dozen aphids per day.

As UK #fruit growers are seeing more and more #pesticide products withdrawn from approval, they are getting much more interested in biological control methods to manage pests - such as predatory insects.

So the FLYTHRIVE project is all about developing a hoverfly-based system (supported by machine vision and odour lures) to give safe and efficient aphid control on soft fruit.

FLYTHRIVE uses AI to drive natural defences and deliver value to growers - Hort News

New research aims to tackle rising insect pest infestations in common berry crops using advanced AI, natural lures and selected species of aphid-feeding hoverflies to continuously monitor the crop and trigger earlier intervention. UK berry growers are threatened by increasing pest infestations which drive down yields and increase costs; aphids can reduce berry crop yields […]

I was pleased to get the rough cutting of the grass paths all round and across the plot done last weekend.  During the week I finally finished digging out and sieving the last of the compost from t…

Rather excitingly, the hoverfly+bumblebee pollinated plants produced fruits with the highest vitamin C concentration, higher than either the self-pollination or hoverfly-pollination scenarios. [4/]

#Nutrition #SoftFruit #Pollination

Strawberries are a great source of vitamin C. When grown on farms, the quality standards are very high - fruit need to be regularly-shaped, decently-sized and evenly-coloured. Poor pollination can result in irregular and thus unmarketable fruit.

Reminder: Niab's Soft Fruit Technical Day coming up next week (28th November). Free online event, 09:10 to 14:15 GMT, a range of short talks on how our research can be applied to soft-fruit growing systems. Crop physiology & biology, IPPM, sustainable growing.

Niab Soft Fruit Day - 28 Nov | NIAB

Also nice to catch up with Kent's amazing fruit growers, agronomists, biocontrol suppliers and others.

Chatted about some of the projects we have around pollination and sustainable pest management in fruit crops.

Dodged the showers to get these in. It’s not been a bad year with the blackcurrant haul particularly good.

We need some sunshine to ripen the blueberries though.
