Behind Instagram: Systrom and Krieger - Negative PID

Kevin Systrom met Mike Krieger at Stanford. Social networking wasn’t on their radars. Years later, their philosophy would become the heartbeat of Instagram.

Must-watch: John Oliver explains how Elon Musk ruined Twitter - In Brief

John Oliver discusses how an already flawed Twitter got worse under Elon Musk, how it continues to impact us all, and what it has to do with the 30-40 trillion cells humans are composed of.

In Brief

Social media shouldn't feel like a toxic relationship.

On Valentine's Day, we're asking people and organisations to take control of their relationship with social media.

Set boundaries, communicate your needs, and move on if they're not being met. We deserve to use social media that values us, rather than our data.

There are plenty of fish in the sea, we just need to show them that the biggest isn't always the best 👀

"The old way of thinking about how to make #socialplatforms safer was that you had to make them do more #contentmoderation.
But by the mid-2020s, almost everyone knew both adults & children who struggled to regulate their usage of apps and suffered as a result.
Regulators & plaintiffs’ attorneys began new investigations into whether a #socialapp might be held liable not for what people said on it, but rather how it worked.
Increasingly, it appears they will."

Social media as a schizoid retreat

When reading The Forces of Destiny by Christopher Bollas I was struck by this description of a schizoid retreat into an internal fantasy world. In essence I take him to be saying that the subject foregoes the reality principle by turning to an internal object world which is cut off from relations with external objects:

As I have suggested, the schizoid path taken by the child who develops a relationship to these ghosts is an act of alterity. The child chooses to live in an alternative purely internal world, rather than to negotiate a settlement with the actual life of the family, peers, and others. I would not suggest that there is a single route to this selection, but I think we can consider at least three fundamentally different but nonetheless related pathways to this schizoid solution.

Pg 97

Does social media provide a fourth pathway to a (slightly mutated) schizoid solution? This is an extreme version of a more common experience of social media as bolstering what Winnicott talked about as the ‘false self’: a presentation of the self orientated towards the accumulation of positive regard from external others rather than the spontaneous expression of instinctual relating. Social platforms actively incentivise this in a whole range of ways. Indeed we might say that one has to proactively try to avoid this, in one’s own terms, as a default mode of engagement designed into the logic of the platform.

The schizoid solution is something more extreme. It’s the false self in dialogue with other false selves. Spontaneity reduced into the reactive logic on the dreamworld of the platform. An externality which is entirely subsumed into these confines. No thought, no challenge, no movement beyond what is allowed for on the platform. A dreamworld which can consume many hours of each day, interspersing the necessary engagements with the object world with continual interruptive returns. Nothing ever feels too real. Indeed nothing is real relative to the externalised internal world of the platform.

The opinion I have on @levihildebrand.bsky.social after watching some of his videos are pretty mixed. On the one hand, the topics he picks are pretty great, especially regarding the #society we live in and the #consumerism that's gone extreme, to the point that we're now pretty much monetizing everything and turning anything into a subscription (including our food!!!) and things that we considered normal for the regular folk around 20 years ago have become pretty much a luxury.

On the other hand, the fact that he's putting so much effort into creating content for #corporate #centralized #SocialPlatforms like #YouTube, #Instagram, #Threads etc. exclusively is kinda getting me concerned. Even on #Bluesky (where this entire post will also go bits by bits), it looks like he hasn't posted anything since 10 months ago at the moment of me writing this post. Like, I know that there are only 256 people that are checking your content, but keep in mind that among all these 256 people there are many who resonate with his messages, who want to have a different social media experience, who maybe #self-host in order to get rid of #BigTech, who choose to keep their photos private, outside any service that's monetizing their data and use it for AI training purposes. Maybe some of them do have hobbies, but they keep it offline.

Okay, I saw that he decided to #ditchSpotify in exchange for a personal offline #MusicCollection, but I would still love to be able to see his videos straight here, on #Friendica, via his #PeerTube channel (that currently does not exist).

Levi, if you're still around, and you see this message, please try to spread your message out on #theFediverse and other decentralized platforms (even one not so decentralized such as Bluesky if you do not feel comfortable with anything else just yet) as well. Their very presence does a tremendous good for our societies, giving us an alternative to a world where just a bunch of corporations own our entire capacity to communicate in real time and platform our message to the public. There are plenty of projects, even much more than those involving Bluesky and the AT protocol. I'm writing this from #Friendica, which is a #decentralized #Facebook alternative (with much more features than it), but there are many other projects that can make up for an alternative to just about anything (Pixelfed for #Instagram, Loops for #TikTok, BookWyrm for #Goodreads, Mastodon and PeerTube for #X / #Twitter and #YouTube respectively, there's even a platform for podcasts called #Castopod).

There are plenty of other YouTubers that are mirroring their content and have a presence here, yet they still keep a presence on other platforms among those previously mentioned just fine. And since you do have a significant audience, it would be great if you could also promote these alternatives and help them set out their presence here, just like other YouTubers did. It would help many out a lot.

The many branches of the Fediverse

As more and more people are asking me about Mastodon I felt a need for a picture to point at, showcasing how the software known as Mastodon fits into the much larger concept of the Fediverse. I made this infographic to help myself and others explain the many different use-cases

"The #knowledge substrate of our society has become increasingly loose and disorganized. It’s now composed of an extraordinary variety of highly disparate things that claim to be news, from vivid and skillful investigative reporting to openly partisan propaganda through the distributed op-ed cultures of podcasters, Substackers, and streamers. The substrate is also enmeshed with “#news” organizations devoted to discrediting reporting and with #socialplatforms that deliberately shape the subset of information we see based on our own dumb desires and susceptibility to casino tricks—and on the megaplatforms’ drives toward #profit and #power. It’s an unstable mess, and we all know it.*

Landslide; a ghost story

On March 27, 1964, a converted liberty ship named the SS Chena brought a shipment of supplies to the port of Valdez, Alaska. Valdez, which I need you to know is pronounced “valDEEZ,” sits at the end of a fjord—a narrow inlet carved by a glacier.
