Les smileys ne sont pas apparus par magie ni par un comité marketing. Leur invention est le fruit d’un contexte précis, d’une époque où Internet balbutiait encore et où la communication écrite posait un vrai problème de ton et d’interprétation. Une solution simple allait pourtant tout changer.

I'm not very fond of emojis because they look so un-typographical. Break the flow of reading.

I really love emoticons, on the other hand, but —
Because standard smileys constantly get turned into emojies 🙂, and because nose-smileys are weird and old-fashioned :-), and non-nose smileys look like someone's head's been compressed in a really unhealthy way :), however leaving a space in the middle can result in a line break inside the smiley, my best option is now:
• End the sentence with normal punctuation,
• Unicode character 2007 (large space),
• Colon,
• Unicode character 2008 (small space),
• Closing bracket.

"2007-:-2008-)" is easy enough to remember. Looks like this: : )

If you're honest with yourself, what style of faces do you use in online communication?

Not the vibe you'd like to give off, but what you really do in practice. And let's limit it to personal communication, not your worksona.

As Ru̇u̇ťalis' orthography features quite a few uncommon variations on Latin letters (namely: U̇u̇, Ėė, Ťť, Šš, Žž), some unique smiley variants emerged when a language community first emerged on the internet, including:

• u̇/u̇ (bags under the eyes, tired)
• Ť.Ť (frustrated, disappointed)
• Š (a snake; usually meant as a threat or as posturing)
