Meno on rajun näköistä, mutta lyhytkestoista ja kuuluvan äänen käyttö on oleellinen osa viestintää. Suomessa pesii lähes 50% EU-alueen mustakurkku-uikuista, eli on suuresti vaarantunut lintulaji.
