Kettu saalistusreissulla – Fox on a hunting trip
Koskikarojen ruokailupaikoilla jään reunamilla näkyy paljon ketunjälkiä ja tässä yksi niiden tekijöistä. Ketut ovat kaikkiruokaisia ja vesien äärellä on lintujen lisäksi mm. jyrsijöitä ja näätiä (lumikko, kärppä, minkki), joita voi yrittää saalistaa. Koskikarat ovat edelleen tallella. :)

At the feeding places of white-throated dippers, you can see a lot of fox tracks on the edges of the ice, and here is one of their makers. Foxes are omnivores, and in addition to birds, there are rodents and mustelids (weasels, stoats, minks) that can be hunted by the waters. The white-throated dippers are still there. :-)

Lumikko on tehokas metsästäjä – Least weasel is an effective hunter

Kaikenlaista tulee metsässä vastaan, mutta vielä en ole saanut kuvattua lumikkoa saaliinsa kanssa. Tässä kuitenkin lumikkokuvan jälkeen on kuva metsähiirestä ja sitten kolme kuvaa löytämästäni paikasta, jossa näyttää tapahtuneen saalin karvan nyppiminen ja syönti (paitsi palanen, joka ehkä on pahanmakuinen sappi maksan ohessa). Tuumailin, että mikä ihme saalistaja nyppii saaliin karvan. Pöllö paloittelee ja syö jyrsijän muutamana suupalana ja haukka lienee myös. Vieressä näkyi paljon pienia jalanjälkiä ja oltiin lumikon reviireillä, niin lumikko luultavimmin. Ja Lumikko kuulemma nyppii karvaa käyttäen sitä pesäkolonsa vuoraamiseen.

You come across all sorts of things in the forest, but I haven't yet managed to photograph the least weasel with its prey. Here, however, after the least weasel picture, there's a picture of a wood mouse and then three pictures of a place where it seems that the prey's hair was plucked and then was eaten (except for a piece that may be a foul-tasting gall along with the liver). I thought what kind of predator is plucking the hair of its prey. The owl cuts and eats the rodent in a few bites and the hawk probably too. There were a lot of small footprints next to place, and it was in the territories of the least weasel, so predator was probably the least weasel. And least weasels are said to pluck the fur and use it to line its nest hole.

Lumikko uteliaana – Curious least weasel

Kun istuu lähellä lumikon koloa hiljaa paikallaan, niin sen arkuus karisee ja se käy lähemmäksi tutustelemaan. Yhdestä liikahduksesta se on takaisin kolossaan, mutta jos se ei tunne uhkaa, se vilistelee pitkin ja poikin hangella ja läheisissä hiiren käytävissä... Ja pongahtaa yhtäkkiä jostain hyvin läheltä uteliaana katsomaan.

When you sit quietly near least weasel's nest hole, its shyness disappears and it moves closer to investigate. With one movement, it is back in its hole, but if it doesn't feel threatened, it scurries up and down the snow and in nearby mouse passages... And suddenly pops up from somewhere very close to look at you curiously.
