Saapuessaan keväällä pesimäalueilleen, mustakurkku-uikkuparit saattavat asettua lähekkäin toisten parien kanssa. Naapureiden kanssa sitten selvitetään, missä rajat menevät. Meno on rajun näköistä, mutta lyhytkestoista ja kuuluvan äänen käyttö on oleellinen osa viestintää. Suomessa pesii lähes 50% EU-alueen mustakurkku-uikuista, eli on suuresti vaarantunut lintulaji.
