Nesting Pied- Billed Grebe: The grebe parents were working hard on the nest even though it was already filled with eggs. This behaviour seemed so odd to me, so I did some reading. Because the grebes create a floating platform on which to nest, the weight of the eggs makes the platform begin to sink. To prevent the eggs from going underwater, the grebe parents are constantly finding new vegetation to put under the nest to keep the platform above water level. Both parents will leave the nest as needed to work on the platform, but the eggs stay warm because the decaying vegetable matter gives off heat, acting like a mechanical incubator. I dropped a little comment into one of the posts in my "What the Duck?" thread (thanks to @CCirco for giving it a name!).

"Grebes are apparently flamingos"

No-one picked up on it. I can think of many reasons, in descending order of probability:

1. No-one read it

2. No-one cared

3. Everyone already knows grebes are flamingos and I'm just late to the party

4. Most folks may know what a flamingo is, but maybe they don't know grebes.

Gliding through the morning mist. 🪶 Watching this Pied-billed Grebe move across the calm water is so peaceful. I love how its reflection is almost as sharp as the bird itself! These little divers have such a quiet, steady presence on the lake. ✨

Great Crested Grebe Family 🤎

The parents feed the chicks with small fish they catch. So fun to watch! I admired this for a while, and then the parents swam out of my sight with their little grebes in their pajamas.
