'Speaking' tactile sidewalks enrich lives of visually impaired

Tactile paving for people with visual impairments in Japan has recently been enhanced with audio guidance, as the developers of the technology aim to improve the lives of people with partial sight and assist sighted tourists. The new braille blocks are marked with black stickers in special patterns. By scanning…

Our new induction hob WITH DIALS!! was installed this week. I can cook again! 🥲

Cookology, you absolutely rock.

I think I have just given myself #RSI by using a refreshable braille display. Or possibly that plus doom-scrolling using Android #accessibility mode and my highly ergonomic typing position. Maybe I should use that desk.

Don't tell HR.

@[email protected] @[email protected] It's evil, because *only* if you're blind or unable to complete the visual captcha, do they require your email address. 'Oh, let's be another corporation, but we're niche and specific. We only want email addresses of those who are blind/visually impaired, so we could, at our discretion, spam them with blindness-specific products or services that our visual users would never see, as they never had to provide an email address.' When you go to the chemist (drug store or whatever it's called today) to buy, oh I dono, tampons, do you have to give them your email address because you're a woman? Nope. Very, very definitely nope, but because I'm blind, I have to give some nameless, faceless company my address, to have a cookie that hardly ever works anyway at the best of times, and even when it does, is now tracking me across any site with *their* version of so-called captcha? No. Absolutely not. Get the hell out with that.

Being sight-impaired, people often ask me what my vision is like. As I’ve been sight impaired since birth I can’t explain how my sight differs, as this is all I’ve ever known. I can describe the posterior vitreous detachments though, as they’re more recent. I have large round floaters roughly in my central vision. I’ve drawn them both here, alongside a rough pastel sketch of the view of a cedar tree through my left eye.

Being a partially-sighted artist, I’m fascinated by how differently we all see the world.

Because of the angle of the sunlight, the shadows in this photo of a footprint appear on the lower edge of the imprint rather than the upper edge. Our brains expect light to come from above, so i see this as a footprint shape sticking up out of the sand rather than indented into it.

How do you see it?

Also, rather than hound people who don’t use ALT text, just refuse to like or boost pictures that don’t have ALT text.

You could also repost their memes, screenshots, etc. and add your own ALT text. Don’t do this with their own pictures/artwork ofc, but pictures that aren’t theirs anyway are fair game. It’s not about teaching people a lesson; it’s about discouraging ableism and fostering an inclusive environment.

A gentle reminder that this is Disability Pride Month—a perfect time to get into the habit of adding ALT text to any pictures you post. There are many sight-impaired individuals who would appreciate it, and even those with excellent vision sometimes need clarity on what is going on in a picture, or what is significant about it. ALT text is also a great opportunity to add more context, humor, or commentary.

Leckhampton Hill Trig Point is another pointillism-style watercolour painting, based on a walk on Leckhampton Hill. This is the view across towards Charlton Kings Common from the trig point at the top of the hill.
