Meta eliminates fact-checking in latest bow to Trump

Facebook and Instagram owner Meta says it’s scrapping its third-party fact-checking program and replacing it with “community notes” written by users similar to the model used by Elon Musk’s social platform X. The company said Tuesday it is ending the program because expert fact checkers have their own biases and too much content gets fact checked. Incoming President Donald Trump said the changes at Meta “probably” came because of his threats against chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg. The Meta announcement comes on the four-year anniversary of Zuckerberg banning Trump from his platforms after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

A sex offender is the first person in England and Wales to be convicted under a new cyber-flashing law. He has been sentenced to more than five years in prison. Nicholas Hawkes was convicted of sending unsolicited photos of his genitals in February to a teenage girl and a woman in violation of the Online Safety Act. The cyberflashing law makes it an offense to send unsolicited sexual images by social media, dating apps or technologies such as Bluetooth or Airdrop. Hawkes was on the sex offenders register after being convicted of exposure and sexual activity with a child under 16.

Jury awards climate scientist Michael Mann $1 million in defamation lawsuit

A jury on Thursday in Washington, D.C. said climate scientist Michael Mann was defamed 12 years ago when a pair of conservative writers compared his depictions of global warming to a convicted child molester. The jury awarded him $1 million. Mann, a professor of climate science at the University of Pennsylvania, rose to fame for a graph first published in 1998 in the journal Nature that was dubbed the “hockey stick” for its dramatic illustration of a warming planet.
