What's with this #government of ours? #Canadians take note.

Bill C-8 is currently in second reading in #parliament. It's nominally about increasing "cyber" security. But it contains one of the most chilling things I've seen in #legislation.

In short, it allows a government minister to, with the stroke of a pen, make it illegal for any telecommunications provider in the country to provide any services to any specified person.

No internet.
No phone.
No anything.

Presto: you're suddenly incommunicado.

Note that's without a warrant, without a judge's approval, without a trial, without a charge, nothing, and there's nothing the person being banished can do about it until after the fact - and then they'll have to sue the government to try to overturn it. Good luck paying a lawyer for that!

This is our own little step towards fascism. Imagine a government hostile to your interests suddenly deciding you can't communicate with anyone because the things you say annoy them.

Please let your MP know that this legislation is NOT okay!

Active-duty service members won't get paid on time unless #Congress passes a separate piece of #legislation, as it did in 2013 with the "Pay Our Military Act," which ensured #military pay & allowances continued during a government #shutdown.

Rep Jen Kiggans (R-VA) introduced a bill in Sept with bipartisan support, the "Pay Our Troops Act of 2026," to keep members of the military & Coast Guard paid during a shutdown, but it did not pass in time because the #House is out of session until Oct 7.

Government headed to a shutdown after last-ditch vote fails in Senate

Senate Democrats have voted down a Republican bill to keep funding the government, putting it on a path to a shutdown after midnight Wednesday. The 55-45 vote Tuesday on the bill to extend federal funding for seven weeks fell short of the 60 needed to end a filibuster and pass the legislation. After the vote, the White House’s Office of Management and Budget issued a memo saying “affected agencies should now execute their plans for an orderly shutdown.” The action comes as Democrats are making good on their threat to close the government if President Donald Trump and Republicans won’t accede to their health care demands.

If #funding #legislation isn’t passed by #Congress & signed by #Trump Tues night, many government offices across the nation will be temporarily shuttered & nonexempt #FederalWorkers will be furloughed, adding to the strain on #workers & the #economy.

#Democrats are using one of their few points of leverage to demand #legislation to extend #healthcare benefits.
#Republicans are refusing to compromise & daring Democrats to vote against legislation that would keep funding mostly at current levels.
