Hey #Ottawa! I was negligent (actually preoccupied) and forgot to note on Monday, December 9th, that we were experiencing our earliest sunset (not that you could see it, given the weather!). The time has bottomed out at around 4:19 PM, and from this point onward the Sun will set later in the day, until June 26th.
Most people assume those dates fall on the solstices, but the solstices are only determined by the direction that the Earth's axis points. The earliest and latest sunrise/sunset times are determined by that, *plus* other factors like when perihelion and aphelion occur (when Earth is closest and farthest from the Sun, respectively), and how fast we are moving around the Sun as a result. I think latitude factors in, as well. It's complicated, and I never fully understood all the factors in combination.
Here's all the upcoming dates, from https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/canada/ottawa :
Earliest sunset: December 9 2024
Latest sunrise: January 2 2025
Earliest sunrise: June 15 2025
Latest sunset: June 26 2025
So, early risers will have to wait until the beginning of January to see improvement in the length of the day at that end 😊. For folks that sleep in, like me, Yay! 😄
