In Finnish folklore, Äkräs was a goddess of many plants, especially rutabagas (and later potatoes). Conjoined ones were called "äkräs rutabagas," and believed to have extra fertility power if placed in a hole as part of a ritual. Bread was offered to Äkräs before a field was sowed.

#Rutabaga is one of my favorite words. So long you say it with an over emphasized #Swedish accent.
My spouse says potato #auGratin, I say
#rutabaga!

What to call a #rutabaga in English? Swedish #turnip is a bit OTT, calling them swedes makes me uncomfortable. In my head they're neeps, but not many anglos know what neeps are.

While idly looking for names, I read some webpages mentioning Charles Townshend and learned that many "history" websites just copy others, often verbatim, without investigation. Clickbaity, what?

This old BBC page is delightful (apart from the pathname) https://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/empire_seapower/agricultural_revolution_01.shtml

"What disaster?"

'Your face! You look like rutabaga!"

It's easy to forget how tough swede (rutabaga) is.

I'm making a spiced root veg mash with plenty of leftovers for further Culinary shenanigans and all the chop chop is moider in the wrist.

I shall not be defeated!

Today's food was very simple, but quite filling and tasty:

  • peeled a rutabaga and cut it into fairly large chunks
  • washed and peeled a couple of rather large carrots, and also cut those into similarly sized chunks
  • washed potatoes, and cut them in half, skin-on
  • Put all these in my #CrockPot Express #MultiCooker on top of the grate that came with it, and filled it with water just below the top of the grate. Added salt to the veggies, but I think I added too little.
  • Closed the lid, set the valve to 'sealed' and turned the Crock-Pot to Steam function for 8-10 minutes (can't quite remember what I set it to).
  • Cut a large onion in strips and added it to a small frying pan with a bit of oil, salt, and pepper, and put a lid on top, on medium to low heat while the Crock-Pot was heating up.
  • crushed and sliced some garlic and added it to the onions when it was time to turn the heat up.
  • once the Crock-Pot was done heating up and switched to steam mode, I cranked up the heat on the onions and removed the lid from the small frying pan. Stirred it every now and then, and added the garlic when they started to brown.
  • once the rutabaga, carrots and taters were finished, I drained them, put them in a separate bowl (to not damage the anti-stick coating), and mashed them all together
  • mixed in a knob of butter, salt, pepper, thyme. Would've added rosemary too, but I seem to be out of it.

Obviously you don't need a Crock-Pot Express for this. You can just prepare it in a regular steamer, or even just a pan with boiling water.

If I'd remembered in time, I'd probably have first sautéed the onions and garlic in the Crockpot too, and then set them aside for later, or even just had let them melt into the veggies by leaving them in the pot. Next time I'd probably also not drain the liquid, or at least keep it aside so I can add it back into the mash after pounding the veggies together.
