Today in Labor History April 14, 1925: Rod Steiger, one of America’s greatest actors, was born on this day. He co-starred in On the Waterfront, as Brando’s older brother, Charlie. He won an academy award as the police chief, opposite Sidney Poitier, in the film In the Heat of the Night. And he played a Mexican bandit and unwitting revolutionary in Sergio Leone’s, Fist Full of Dynamite. He was an outspoken critic of the House Unamerican Activities Committee Communist witch hunt and the purge of left leaning actors and writers in Hollywood. He was critical of Charlton Heston’s stance on weapons.

L'Unità: Chi era Carlo Lizzani, il regista partigiano: dagli studenti antifascisti ad “Achtung! Banditi!”

Who was Carlo Lizzani, the partisan filmmaker: from fascist antifascist students to “Attention! Bandits!”

Carlo Lizzani (1922-2013) was one of Italy’s greatest post-war directors. Before becoming a director, he was a partisan. In Rome, as a student. Together with Renzo Lapiccirella and Massimo Gizzio, he organized the network of anti-fascist students, in hiding. On January 29, 1944, when Rome was under the Nazi yoke, fifty days before the Fosse Ardeatine massacre, he proclaimed the general anti-fascist strike in schools. With Gizzio and Lapiccirella, he led a procession, near Piazza Cavour. The three of them at the head.

Suddenly, a squad of armed fascists, also students, approached and fired. Gizzio was shot in the back by a revolver. Three days of agony and then he died. The perpetrators, after Liberation, were arrested, recognized as guilty but acquitted. Their action was considered one of war. After Liberation, Lizzani dedicated himself to cinema. He was an assistant director with Rossellini. Then, in 1951, when he was still under 30, his first film, which had great success: “Achtung banditi” with Gina Lollobrigida. Lizzani was already a member of the Communist Party during the resistance. He left in 1956, after the Pci’s support for the Soviet invasion of Hungary.

He directed dozens of highly successful films. Among others: Chronicles of Poor Lovers (1954, with Mastroianni), The Trial of Verona (1963, with Silvana Mangano and Salvo Randone), Bandits in Milan (1968, with Volonté), Mussolini – Final Act (1974, with Rod Steiger), Hotel Meina (2017). In 2013, when he was 91 years old, he decided that it was his time. He jumped from the fourth floor of an apartment where he lived on Via dei Gracchi, a stone’s throw from the place where Massimo Gizzio was killed.

★★★½☆

3 things about Tony Richardson’s THE LOVED ONE [1965]

1. In preparation, she paints herself.
2. Not only waterproof or moisture-proof, but damp-proof.
3. “It’s a new one, it’s a new one! Oh God! Oh God, oh God.”

Luis Buñuel tried to make the film first; when he was unsuccessful, he sold the option to Tony Richardson.
