The City of Houston has launched a “Train Watch” webpage meant to provide residents with real-time information on rail crossings with stopped trains. They have long been a problem, particularly on the east side.

Houston’s new ‘Train Watch’ tool part of efforts to improve safety, reduce traffic at rail crossings

According to the city, the Train Watch webpage uses more than $230,000 of donated railway sensor equipment to determine if any of the more than 70 railroad crossings in the city are blocked by trains.

Ahead of a new school year, Union Pacific has lifted the train traffic curfew at the rail crossing near Milby High School in Houston, where a 15-year-old student died last December while crossing the tracks on his way to school.

Union Pacific resumes morning and afternoon train traffic near Houston’s Milby High School

In December a student was struck and killed by a Union Pacific Railroad train on his walk to school. In the aftermath Union Pacific promised to limit train traffic in the area during student drop-off and pick-up times. But as a new school year is set to start next week, the company has resumed normal traffic conditions, surprising a local leader.

Senate Bill 1555, which was signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott last weekend, was filed after the death of Sergio Rodriguez — a 15-year-old Houston ISD student who was struck by a train while walking to Milby High School.
