A standard roundabout is not inherently safe for cyclists. Vehicles crossing the bike lane multiple times at uncomfortable angles is not a safe design.

A bike roundabout, modeled on Dutch intersection design, gives cyclists their own separate circular path. Vehicles yield to cyclists at every crossing.

The geometry is simple. The safety result is dramatic.

And it almost never gets built in the United States.

City of Bend explains new 'protected' Third and Wilson intersection, designed to boost cyclist, pedestrian safety - KTVZ

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The city of Bend's recently opened Wilson Avenue Corridor includes a protected intersection at the corner of Wilson Avenue and Third Street. The protected intersection is very similar to a traditional intersection except that it provides more separation and visibility between different modes of travel, city officials said this week. Here's

Thomas St: 5th Ave N to Dexter Ave N - Transportation | seattle.gov

Create an enhanced pedestrian and bicyclist environment by reducing vehicular volume on Thomas St between 5th Ave N and Dexter Ave N.

Visualizing a Protected Intersection in Wellfleet — Pedal Ptown

A MassDOT project in Wellfleet that is about to start construction in fall 2023 is a good example of a lost opportunity. The intersection of Route 6 and Main St is getting rebuilt with sidewalks and bike lanes, but it isn’t designed as a protected intersection. I’ve spent some time putting together
