A photo of the #CommunityGarden back in its heyday... Soon to return to its former glory!

#SolarPunkSunday #CommunityGardens #BuildingCommunity #GYO

Wow! So yeah. The #CommunityGarden is coming back to life! And the fellow organizing it loves the idea of a "food forest" anchored by the nearby apple tree! I'll be using my organizational skills to help keep track of things! A great team is starting to form... Now I know why it was time to give up DJ'ing -- for this!!!

Alrighty then. I found some nearby #CommunityGardens, and also some good materials from #UMaineCooperativeExtension , including guidelines!

I'm also going to suggest that the town money be used for these expenses...

- Electric Fence? (If needed)
- Soil Testing?
- Materials to build compost bins?
- Water tank?
- Water source for refilling tank (compensation)?
- Markers to mark out plots?

Bulletin #4300, Steps to Organizing Your Community Garden - Cooperative Extension Publications - University of Maine Cooperative Extension

A community garden is typically a piece of public land tended collectively by a group of people who are interested in growing fresh fruits and vegetables, creating community, and establishing a connection to the environment. This fact sheet in the Food for ME series includes suggestions on how to set up a community garden project, recruit volunteers, and establish a garden plot.

Well, it seems I'm now part of the #CommunityGarden group! The organizer and I just talked, and I'll be sending him resources about what other towns in #Maine are doing. There's also some town money available to fix up the fence and whatever else is needed! Excellent!

#SolarPunkSunday has turned into #ActionMonday!

Today's achievements?

- Got the phone number of the person organizing the #CommunityGarden.
- Gently nudged neighbor select board member about ordering #composters and #rainbarrels (and praised all the good work he's doing)
- Dropped off a condolence card and photo mug to another neighbor who recently lost a feline friend
- Helped to fix a PDF file for the local #library (remotely), then asked if they had any "#NatureBackpacks".

I'd say I've done some #SolarPunk things today! (#BuildingCommunity is something I consider a major tenet of all things Solarpunk!)

#Online - #CommunityGardens and #FoodSecurity in Maine

April 14 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm
Cost: $0 - $15

"This webinar is hosted by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.

Across Maine, community gardens are increasing food security by bringing people together to grow food for their communities. This panel will explore how collective garden spaces allow neighbors to work side by side to grow fresh, local food that is donated to food security organizations. Panelists will share real examples from across Maine and offer practical insights into how community gardens get started, build partnerships, and grow into lasting resources that strengthen local communities.

Speakers: Rachel Stamieszkin, Master Gardener Volunteer in Cumberland County, Johnny Sanchez, Collective Gardens Program Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator at #FoodAndMedicine (FAM), and Julia St. Clair, Agricultural Programs Manager at #BrunswickTopshamLandTrust."

(Almost) Anything is Fixable.

Oak Park Fix-It Cafe is a group of community members who gather once a month to hang out, help anyone with any needed repairs, and (sometimes) even learn a new skill or two!

Come join your neighbors as we share what we have to fix what we need. Or just come as you are, take a load off, have a cup o’ joe and a cookie, and maybe make some new friends. If you need to just relax with friends, we’re here for that. If you want to get your hands a little dirty, we can help there, too.

This is always FREE, and always for EVERYONE—no matter your housing status, language or background."
