Hormuz, airports #EU at risk due to fuel if the Strait remains closed. Fears for the summer.

European airports risk a “systemic” shortage of jet fuel if the Strait of Hormuz is not fully reopened within three weeks. This is the warning from the Financial Times, citing a letter from ACI Europe, representing EU airports, addressed to European Commissioner for Transport Apostolos Tzitzikostas. Aircraft fuel reserves are dwindling, while the impact of military activity on demand is further straining supplies.

In the letter, reported by the economic-financial daily, “growing concerns of the airport sector regarding the availability of jet fuel, as well as the need for monitoring and proactive action by the EU” are highlighted. ACI has therefore requested a European monitoring of supplies to help the sector coordinate the response. “A supply crisis - reads the letter - would seriously disrupt airport operations and air connectivity, with the risk of severe economic repercussions for affected communities and for Europe in the event of a systemic shortage of jet fuel.”

According to Argus Media, a price information agency, benchmark jet fuel prices in Northwest Europe closed at $1,573 per ton on Thursday, up from the approximately $750/t before the war with Iran. European airlines say they have sufficient fuel stocks for several weeks, but suppliers are unable to guarantee deliveries until May.

This problem is compounded by the approach of the peak summer season, when “air transport is fundamental to the entire tourism ecosystem from which many EU economies depend.” Some Asian countries, such as Vietnam, have begun to ration jet fuel due to the shortage, but Europe has so far not recorded widespread shortages, although fuel prices have doubled and airlines have warned of the risk of cancellations.

Despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the war with Iran, global oil prices have remained high.

Hype for the Future 83E: Is Iceland Immune to Heteronormativity?

Introduction Though Iceland has traditionally focused on collective survival over private coupledom, the national identity had largely been gendered, as with the vast majority of national identities elsewhere. In the case of the island nation, however, many of the gender markers have largely been reference markers rather than role enforcers, as in the following demonstrations: Icelandic Names In Iceland, traditional family names are largely encouraged, and the national registry maintains a […]
