What is it and what does the European Political Community serve for?

AGI - The European Political Community is an informal forum established in 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, at the urging of French President Emmanuel Macron. The aim is to expand the diplomatic network of the European Union in order to demonstrate that Moscow and its Belarusian ally are increasingly isolated, even within the traditional sphere of influence of the Kremlin. Among the 47 nations that make up the Community are not only the microstates too small to find space among the 27 – such as Andorra, San Marino, or Liechtenstein – and the Balkan countries vying for accession, but also Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as Turkey, today a major weight in diplomacy, and Ukraine itself. The purpose of these summits is not to make decisions, but to build a new space for dialogue and cooperation that can enable exchanges between chancelleries that rarely have the opportunity for face-to-face contact. The ambition is nonetheless to define the boundaries of what will be Europe tomorrow, if not the day after, “more sovereign,” as Macron said upon landing yesterday in the Armenian capital.

It is particularly significant that the eighth summit of the European Political Community takes place in Yerevan. The refusal of Moscow to intervene in support of Armenia in the conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, despite the fact that Russia and the former Soviet republic are, in theory, part of a defensive alliance, has provoked a decisive cooling of relations between the two countries.

The Armenian Path to Europe

Despite trying not to irritate Russian President Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has nevertheless begun the journey towards accession to the European Union, which could take decades.

Russia quietly exits Nagorno-Karabakh seven months after Azerbaijani offensive, ceding its clout 'for good'

Russian troops deployed to Nagorno-Karabakh four years ago to keep the peace between bitter foes Armenia and Azerbaijan. But last September, when Azerbaijani forces swept through the mountainous region and crushed Armenian separatist forces in a matter of hours, the mission looked lost.

I saw some posts saying "if a Muslim country did what #Israel is doing, the reaction would totally different!"

But that just happened, a few months ago, when #Azerbaijan - a Muslim-majority country - blockaded & launched attacks on the contested, Armenian-populated region of #Nagorno-Karabakh

There were also #genocide warnings! It's likely the region will now undergo ethnic cleansing - a forced migration of Armenians from their homeland
