Ran my 14th Bay to Breakers race in 1:57:12 this past Sunday.
Almost 2min behind last year, from needing a 5min+ pitstop at the Panhandle.

I skipped public transport (see previous years), and left at 7am to jog to the start. After ~3.5 miles I found my way to corral A and serendipitously my pal Henri, dressed in the purple grape costume he’s known for.

Beautiful day for a run, cool and sunny blue skies from the start. The South of Market (SoMa) area seemed cleaner than usual which was a nice change.

High-fived the Midnight Runners Raccoon Riot cheergang on Hayes street. Hayes hill was a jog / power hike slog like recent years with a pleasant downhill after. Except by the time I got to Fell street I felt uncomfortable enough to run out to the portapotties and took a while to deal with the discomfort. The prior evening’s dinner out at Thee Parkside was perhaps too much of a change for my system. Novel eats the night before a race a minor rookie mistake.

The parties on Fell Street seemed particularly loud and crowded this year.

Golden Gate Park was beautiful as usual, and I spotted a few November Project San Francisco (NPSF) folks near Blue Heron Lake (formerly known as Stow Lake). We gathered a few more and took photos in front of the Naga Sea Serpent sculpture.

The rest of the race felt like a comfortable downhill til we passed the bison paddock. Normally where the race turns left at the end it turned right to a new southbound finish on Great Highway. Picked up the pace there to finish in 1:57:13 by my watch, only one second off the recorded chip time.

This past week was a step up in running volume over the past few months, ironically a bit of a reverse taper. Including the warmup and race, I ran 29 miles total (Monday through Sunday). That was a big jump from the previous week so I hiked back through Golden Gate park rather than jogging it out.

Ran my 13th Bay to Breakers race in 1:55:31 today! 4min+ faster than last year. Once again the Midnight Runners crew cheered runners in Hayes Valley at the park a couple of blocks before the hill. Felt better than I did last year, more able to sustain a moderate pace. One quick pitstop in Golden Gate Park, and then picked up the pace to finish with a negative split and well under 2 hours. This time I made sure to keep running until I was well past the last timing strip. Other than the Midnight Runners cheer gang, this year I did not see anyone I knew the whole race. Bus + BART + jog to the start. Howard street up to Hayes hill, then by the Panhandle and through Golden Gate park to the finish. I did spot a neighbor after the finish and we caught up on the walk to the N-Judah light rail. Seeing the long line I decided to easy run backwards along the race course to see the costumes and a few human carried floats. Caught the Midnight Runners crew on the Conservatory of Flowers steps and hiked back to the Panhandle together. After catching up with a few friends I went home to shower and eat before heading back to the Panhandle. In contrast to last year, last Friday I only did a short shakeout run — no evening run and staying out late with Midnight Runners. Saturday SFRC was about the same distance. Similar to last year I took a bus to Van Ness, then jogged to the Civic Center station and took BART to Embarcadero. It seems that’s the only reliable transit option, no matter what any mapping application (Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Routesy) claims about bus or lightrail times or routes (they were all wrong, yet again, just like last year). Despite not seeing any friends running the race, feeling both stronger and more confident in my training was enough to boost my mood for the duration. I was grateful to be out there running on a beautiful day. Before this movie, I had only seen Kang Ha Neul in his small role in “Heirs”/“Inheritors" and liked him there, but I will look for him now.

He & Park Seo Joon were great together!

Midnight Runners
(2017 Viki, Movie 1:49)

Great action movie! 2 police university students discover a crime that needs urgent attention & the regular police are too busy. They learn a lot through their efforts & mistakes as they struggle with some ethical questions. There is some comedy & a good bromance, but no romance. I'm glad they didn't try to add that in. That would have been too much for a movie. There are a lot of good fight scenes & training for fighting. I was impressed that the leads don't win every fight, so you don't know what will happen.

If you watch, make sure to watch through the first part of the credits, there's another scene that makes a perfect ending.
