#Wordweavers Aug 5 #IndieAuthors recommendations
I tend to count an author as indie if they’re self-pubbed, extra-small press, not a “TikTok made me buy it sensation!!!!!!”, and/or if they don’t show up at my bookstore/library and I get side-eyed for requesting them.
Sometimes I think an author is indie, and then I go check and they’re a NYT bestselling author and have thousands of reviews, so I’m no real judge 🤷♀️
But by that accounting, my original indie favourites (KJ Charles, Alexis Hall, TJ Klune, T Kingfisher) have all crossed into wider audiences to varying degrees, so I obviously have impeccable taste, and also a burnt mouth*.
These days, with the caveat that I don’t read Amazon-only books, hesitate to start series that are already longer than a trilogy, and generally don’t like YA, contemporary, paranormal, dark, or horror (all of which probably wipes out 90% of indie authors for me 😂), and have a very long TBR list with more indies to try, I am liking:
AJ Demas/Alice Degan, KL Noone, Lisa Henry, Felicia Davin, EH Lupton; and outside that loose category of queer light romantic fantasy, Neve Maslakovik and Julie Bihn (the last four names being #MastoAuthors)
Also, my Kobo Plus reading tends towards the indies, and K+ unlike KU lets authors go wide so you can find them at your preferred provider:
