Ce livre est une vaste étude de l’underground aux États-Unis, un recensement le plus honnête possible de ses réussites et de ses échecs, quelque part entre l’inventaire et l’autopsie. Tel un comptable, Aaron Cometbus étudie les factures en souffrance et remonte à la source de tous les espoirs : peut-on perdurer sans perdre son âme ? Parce que c’était bien là l’objectif : créer des institutions capables de répondre aux besoins de nos communautés, aussi disparates soient-elles.
Passé maître dans l’art du récit et lassé des nobles échecs, l’auteur se penche sur des projets qui ont duré et les étudie d’un œil critique, sans le pinaillage et l’absence de compassion que la gauche radicale, la scène punk et la contre-culture au sens large ont tendance à réserver à ce qui leur est le plus proche. Pourquoi tant de ces projets ont connu un sort épouvantable – souvent le même ? Un tueur en liberté s’en est-il pris à toutes ces institutions chéries ? Et comment faire pour continuer d’expérimenter d’autres manières d’être à l’ombre d’un capitalisme barbare ?

Aaron Cometbus, l’écrivain inconnu le plus connu d’Amérique, édite le fanzine Cometbus depuis 1981. De lui ont notamment été traduits huit livres, dont Double Duce, Un bestiaire de bouquinistes et La Solitude de la menora électrique.
