Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Better Constipation Cures The Brits now tell us that they have some better remedies for the world’s constipation woes and they don’t include high fiber diets or harsh laxatives. A new meta-analysis from the nutritionists at King’s College, London rigorously reviewed 75 clinical trials and gives us some better suggestions for constipation relief. When the data were crunched, it showed significant constipation relief from kiwifruit, rye bread, and mineral rich water. Also helpful were dietary supplements containing psyllium fiber, probiotics, and magnesium oxide. These suggestions are now endorsed by the British Dietetic Association. If you continue to suffer from hard, infrequent stools, why not give them a try. As you do, remember that enough daily water is critical for regular defecation. For adult men, that number is 125 oz and for women 91 oz. We parents do know that kiddies too can become constipated. The magic number for toddlers is 44 oz, for older children 57 oz, for young teen boys 81 oz, for girls 71 oz, for older teen boys 112 oz, for girls 78 oz. For everyone, the water requirements surge with hot weather, exercise, fever, diarrhea, and breastfeeding. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/nmo.70173 https://nap.nationalacademies.org/read/11537/chapter/15 #constipation #fiber #laxatives #water #grains #fruit"

Constipation affects millions worldwide, but new research from King's College, London, offers hope. Dietary supplements containing psyllium fiber, probiotics, and magnesium oxide also showed significant relief. Lewis and Clark marked their trail with laxatives | Offbeat Oregon History | #ORhistory

AS LEWIS AND CLARK’S Corps of Discovery made its way across the continent to Oregon, the men (and woman) of the party probably weren’t thinking much about their place in history. So they weren’t taking any particular pains to document their every movement. There were, however, some particular pains they were experiencing, as a result of a relentlessly low-fiber diet: Everyone was constipated, all the time. Luckily, they had something that helped with that — a lot. The Corps of Discovery left on its journey with a trove of 600 giant pills that the men called “thunder-clappers,” which the soldiers and travelers used to jump-start things when they got bound up. And everyone used them pretty regularly. And, strange as it seems, that fact is why we know several of their campsites along the way. The main active ingredient in “thunder-clappers” was a mercury salt, which is a pretty stable compound. Archaeologists simply have to search for dimples in the ground — which is what old latrine pits often end up looking like, hundreds of years later, after Nature has partly filled them in — and take samples of the dirt in them. If it comes up with an off-the-charts reading for mercury, well, that’s a Corps of Discovery pit toilet — and the layout of the rest of the campsite can be extrapolated with considerable precision by consulting the military manuals they used to lay out their camps. Tomorrow is colonoscopy day (the fun of getting older!). So just know that while you're enjoying hanging out and watching the Super Bowl (or Puppy Bowl if that's your thing), while chowing down on wings and beer, my day won't be as fun. I'll be fasting all day and spending the evening (into the night) making the bathroom my new man cave! 🧻🚽

Wish me luck and let the fun begin! 😂
