Royal Spoonbills

The Royal Spoonbill is a large waterbird found in northern and eastern Australia. It is considered a rare nomadic visitor to Tasmania, however, a small flock has taken up residence at Tamar Island Wetlands just outside of Launceston.

I have seen these birds at the Wetlands on occasion, and I came upon them again on an early morning walk. I have also noticed that the flock appears to have increased in number.

After watching these birds for awhile, they got scared off by a white bellied sea eagle that was flying overhead. I was able to capture some footage of the spoonbills in flight as they flew right over me circling, before deciding it was safe to return to their foraging.

I don’t know about you, but I find watching these spoonbills to be very calming and relaxing.

This hungry Robin fledgling was unsure how to cope with the Small Tortoiseshell butterfly offered as lunch from its parent.
It took a while but the butterfly went down the hatch… eventually.

Great Cormorant Colony

Great Cormorants are the largest cormorant in Australia and are also found in other parts of the world.

They live at places of permanent freshwater as well as coastal inlets and estuaries.

These birds can often be seen diving to catch fish then later perched somewhere with their wings outstretched to dry.

I happened to accidentally come across a small colony of great cormorants when taking a wander around Queechy Lake in Launceston, Tasmania. There were chicks in nests on a little island in the lake which was surprising seeing as it was the middle of May and almost the end of autumn.

Here are a couple of photos of Queechy Lake. You can see the little island full of dead trees and shrubs.
