Wisteria is in exuberant bloom and still on the old, falling over trellis. All six sunflowers seem well after transplanting if a bit of yellow in their leaves. Peas and beans are getting ready for strings to climb. The three potato beds are at different stages despite similar conditions but all look good, with wispy onions coming up down the middle. Garlic has recovered after I yoinked the fungus, which so far has not returned. Not pictured, the greenhouse is doing well too, and I finished the March direct sow planting today. Uh oh. The good: the wisteria blooms! The bad: the wooden supports are entirely inadequate and leaning at an increasingly precarious angle over time. The ugly: flood lights and electrical wires are under the vines, with a fall to a concrete pad at least two meters below. The house had not been lived in for many years when we bought it, so other projects took priority. Do we even have a ladder this tall when it must be free standing? Blistered cup fungi in the raised beds, common in Europe but new to me. They are toxic if eaten raw but do not hurt other plants--except how they crowd them out. I read that yanking them out will release clouds of spoors, but baking soda is effective. And I remind myself that this was always going to be a year of learning: new country, new climate, new beds, new seed companies, new tools, everything. Why not a new fungus too.
