Pair of gadwall ducks on the Iowa River along the #IowaRiverTrail. Actually forgot about this pic that I took in January. Wasn't that great of a photo & I knew I'd need to spend more time editing it than usual. Meant to come back to do that and forgot.

But, this is a lifer for me and when you're a birder that's a big deal. I wasn't sure if they were females or molting males. Any thoughts?

A cold Monday afternoon on the Iowa River and the #IowaRiverTrail. The river has frozen and the only open water in this location is the next to the Iowa Rive Power Dam. You can see the steam coming off the dam in the background. I had to wait for the steam to clear to catch this pic.

Canada geese in flight over the Iowa River along the #IowaRiverTrail.

We're in the midst of some nasty winter weather. The snow has stopped so normally I'd head out to see what's going on but the winds are going to be around 20 mph w/ gusts as high as 40 & wind chills as low as -40°F. Cold doesn't bother me but the wind makes it too unpleasant.

I'm anxious to get out soon to see how things look down on the river.

Prairie coneflowers or yellow coneflowers (Ratibida pinnata seems likely) growing along the #IowaRiverTrail. Prairie coneflowers are a favorite and are common on the trails. I snagged some seeds from the trail this year and hope to get some started in my garden next year.
