I’ve lived a hard life, been forced to rely on myself for everything. I keep my secrets, even from those I love. I hold them at arms’ length for their protection.

It's one thing for my friends with benefits to find out that their mild-mannered gal pal is a camgirl.

I can't let them learn my biggest secret. They can't know about my late night dealings or the job that's made me wealthy enough to buy the whole city if I want.

No one can know that I'm hunting down monsters, or that I’ve become one myself.

It's a lonely life, but what can I do? Until recently, I've been the queen of balance and have kept my two lives separate.

Then a mysterious offer turns things upside down, and everything is chaos.

Once I’ve admitted my feelings for my best friends, my secret threatens to tear us apart. If they ever learn that I caused their tragedy, I'll lose them forever.

I’m home recovering after a bug, post-finishing my doctorate, post-finishing-school-vacation-trip, and in that in‑between space where I’m figuring out how to bring my doctoral thesis into the world as a book while preparing to release the third ecofiction novel in my trilogy.

I’ll share the trilogy more on Instagram soon; but of course I’ll talk about it here too.

While I’m resting, I’ve been thinking about two things:

1. How to share what I’ve learned from writing visionary ecofiction; not as formal tutorials, but as small, generous micro‑snippets of thought.
2. How much I enjoy posting Three Good Things here on Mastodon.

This led me to realize that the micro‑tutorials can become Three Good Things. A small, informal, unstructured series about what I’ve learned so far.

Here we go.

---

Three Good Things I’ve Learned About Writing Visionary Ecofiction

1. It brings community together; even when people disagree.
Across all three novels, I learned so much from people with different perspectives:
• fracking / hydraulic fracturing (Book 1)
• medical marijuana (Book 2)
• high‑speed rail (Book 3).
Ecofiction is a meeting place; not a consensus.

2. Writing is solitary; but you don’t have to be lonely in it.
Anything that helps you contextualize yourself in your larger community is healthy;
walks, cafés, writing groups, reading groups, sharing drafts.
People’s commentary is subjective but sharing your work is grounding.
Place yourself in your wider spheres; it helps.

3. Take joy in the finishing and sharing stages.
There’s real pleasure in thinking about the special parts of your process and how you want to share them.
I love outlining, first drafting, sculpting, revising, hearing the text read back to me, and working with an editor and designer, but also, imagining the visual vignettes that accompany the trilogy. I’m figuring out a visual narrative to share the trilogy on Instagram.
Finishing is its own creative act.

Working in a genre that’s still emerging (visionary ecology or visionary ecofiction) gives me freedom to genre‑bend fearlessly.
Book 1 is a love story (but not a romance).
Book 2 is a mystery (but not a cozy).
Book 3 is an adventure (but not Indiana Jones).
The elasticity is part of the joy.

These are my three good things today, the first in what I hope will become an informal series of micro‑tutorials on writing visionary ecofiction.

What lights are you up? When you write, how do you define yourself within your genre?

Keep writing and share!

PS, the photo was taken at Giverny, Monet’s Garden in France, on my recent trip.

I always thought death was the end. Turns out, it’s only the beginning.

For years I am alone, confined to this house. I know nothing but pain and loneliness, until three new homeowners move in, and I realize one of them can see me.

When one of them finds my ring, everything changes. It feels like coming alive again as I’m able to interact with each man, but like all things, the good times don’t last.

My ring is more of a threat than we expected.

I must find the strength to let go of the loves of my afterlife, for their own sakes. Because there’s nothing worse than death… right?

a few years ago i mentioned that i wrote a book about the exciting, awkward and embarrassing experiences of growing up with computers and video games in the 80s and 90s.

i wanted to remember what it felt like being the only dorky computer kid at school. or what it was like to hear my first modem handshake sound. or starting the first flamewar on the school's national FirstClass BBS in the macintosh lab over the lunch-hour

it was originally something i wrote only for my family and friends who were there at the time.

and then i met all of you folks when i started my first masto instance 4 years ago. i had no idea there were so many hardcore retrocomputing and gaming nerds out there; unix and mac and ms-dos folks alike.

so i mentioned it casually. i was surprised by the interest in the book.

so i spent the better part of the past 3 years rewriting the book for *you* fellow mastodon dorkus malorkuses. the book is a celebration of all of the best (and worst) parts of a kid growing up in the digital age.

we're all busy old tired stressed folks now. so every memory and cringetacular story is short enough to read on a 5 minute bus/metro/toilet ride. they're weaved together into an arc that starts at my family's first Tandy TRS-80 and ends at my school's Mac LC II and building my first Pentium 133.

it's finally published, and i'm super proud of what it became thanks to everyone here nerding out for years.

enjoy the book. i wrote it just for you. ❤️
