Quietly working on the #c64 assembler, I integrated some small utilities, notably HEXDUMP. Which by complete coincidence yielded this most #cyberpunk of (literal) screenshots.

I'll post source code at some point, but for now you'll have to log onto an actual #BBS to get it. (!)

Before I had #internet, I had a #bbs.

I was a grown-ass adult, and the internet wasn't perfect. For one thing, the fastest speed you could get at home was 128kbps.

Your home page was what we'd now call bookmarks - links you wanted to be able to find again. It was what you told Netscape to show you when you logged in.

A good place to shop online was Cyberia, and Amazon was a feminist booksore in Minneapolis. It would take hours to download a song, which was why Netflix sent you movies through the mail.

Before my hometown Astros had their own website, a guy named Ray set up AstrosDaily. He didn't try to sell us anything, we just hung out and chatted about baseball and life.

i object to the whole "90s nostalgia is just cause you were a kid and unaware of how terrible everything was" because yeah, maybe but in the 90s what nazis did was still very much living memory and people knew what you do to them. also technology actually was a source of life improvements and optimism instead of whatever the fuck this techno-fascist hype cycle bullshit we have now is my home country the netherlands hadn't been hollowed out by decades of neoliberal bullshit i could keep going

When most people think about the classic BBS door game Barren Realms Elite, they probably remember the drippy logo from John Dailey's 1999 release.

But, in fact, BRE went through *many* different title screens during the years it was under active development by its creator, Mehul Patel.

Check out this gallery of 14 BRE title screens, culled from my collection of 40 BRE releases between 1992 and 1997.

For the last 25 years, Barren Realms Elite (BRE) has been frozen in amber, with the same ANSI title screen.

But it was preceded by _lots_ of other designs from 1992-97.

I put together a gallery of 14 of these forgotten screens:

I hope you'll enjoy revisiting the changing looks of a classic BBS door game.
