The Dead Room by Catriona McPherson

Lindsay Hale, recently widowed returns to her Scottish hometown. She meets an older woman, and they have a nice chat in a lovely older home. Lindsay is so jetlagged that she falls asleep there.

Later that night Lindsay makes it home to her brother’s house. Her brother is running the family business, a junkyard with too many childhood memories.

Lindsay and her brother were once close. They now feel estranged. Her family encourage her to stay with them, but she feels she needs to be on her own. She wants a place of her own so she can continue her work as an audio book narrator. For that job she needs a dead room. She needs to set the room up to restrict noise from the outside world. Dead room is a term from the business of recording books.

Lindsay’s husband narrated books also and she believes that if she can get back to work, she will be better able to deal with her grief.

Lindsay’s best friend takes it upon herself to find Lindsay a home. She finds one and it happens to be the same home as the older lady; that recently had been vacated.

Lindsay questions where the older woman is but no one can seem to be able to tell her. She decides to find her because she feels compelled. The older woman had loved her house so much that Lindsay feels she needs the older woman’s permission to live there.

Nefarious things are going on and Lindsay pushes for answers partly because she fears her family may be involved in something dark are mysterious.

This is a very subtle ghost story. But is there a real ghost or just the ghost of the past that haunts Lindsay. Is Lindsay losing her mind or are there things happening around her that are paranormal?

This is my first book by this author that I have read and I enjoyed it. I will look for more in the future.

I am hoping to read a Patricia Cornwell book each month starting with Black Notice. I was a huge fan and for some reason didn’t get back to this series. I think the adaptation on Netflix got me interested. Have you read any of them?
