When painting pirates, prominent Victorian artist Howard Pyle relied a lot on his imagination as few authentic images were available. He was especially inspired by Romani clothing. Thanks to Pyle, pirates are often envisioned with colorful kerchiefs, sashes, and other adornments.

The Brandywine style sprang from Howard Pyle's instruction at the very start of the 20th century. A hundred years later, they still capture the magic of story-telling with their attention to light and gesture.
