Fafnir – Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research invites authors to submit papers for issue 1/2026. Research into any and all aspects of science fiction, fantasy, and other speculative genres is welcome from a range of disciplines.

The deadline for article submissions is 30 June 2026. Submissions should be made through the online portal: https://fafnir.journal.fi/about/submissions

This issue is scheduled to be published in December 2026.

What is Fafnir?

Fafnir – Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research is a peer-reviewed open-access academic journal published online twice a year by Finfar – The Finnish Society for Science Fiction and Fantasy Research.

Fafnir is an international forum for scholarly exchange on speculative genres and discussion on current issues in the field. Fafnir provides an interdisciplinary perspective into the research focusing on speculative literature, audiovisual art, games, and fan culture.

Fafnir also promotes Nordic research of speculative fiction. Although Fafnir is not limited to Nordic themes, the journal accepts papers in all Nordic languages and in English. Fafnir publishes e.g. peer-reviewed research articles, essays, and academic book reviews.

Fafnir was a recipient of a World Fantasy Award – the first ever awarded to an academic journal – in 2020!
