The label from the very first rosé wine I made, with friend David Jordan, at Oregon State University.

The grapes came from various vines in OSU's grape variety mother block, hence the "mélange" in the name. The "Sä-môn" was a reference to its orange colour...

Label drawn by Catherine Hibbitt.

The label from the very first wine I made, with friend David Jordan, at Oregon State University. Dave was studying for his PhD and I for my MS at the time. My very talented friend Catherine Hibbitt drew the label, which I went on to use for future vintages.

The grapes came from a research block and was fermented in glass carboys.

Great memories, and the wine was well regarded by all accounts...

We gleaned grapes, mostly "second crop" premium Napa Cabernet for about 5 years before we started buying grapes. #HomeWinemaking

Eighteen bottles of mulberry wine, bottled and ready to age.

We lost two or three to dregs, sadly.

It's definitely young (six months), but it's promising.

If it comes out as well as we think it will, there's likely to be more made later this year. Too many mulberry trees to ignore!

Racked the mulberry wine a bit ago.

Current ABV is 17.5 percent.

That's 35 proof for those of you keeping score. Who needs to distill?

ELEVEN POUNDS OF MULBERRIES

After picking out the underripe ones, leaves, twigs, one tiny caterpillar, and other inedibles, that's the net. Eleven pounds, in ziplock freezer bags.

There will be muffins tomorrow and wine in the near future.

A successful afternoon of wine making: 1 demijohn of carrot from May safely in bottles and 1 bucket of carrot and 1 of parsnip moved off the lees into demijohns to finish fermenting for a few months.
