@edintone @david @bethroots I did see that & was reminded about the now-gone gup . pe group.
Though I think #geneaology groups might be more visible than #genchat

Ok, I bought a book to learn how to deal with my dad's DNA genealogy. They suggest, and provide instructions for, Airtable.

Airtable uses AI to determine relationships between entries in its database. It's possible, but tedious, to do this by hand.

Is this an ethical use of AI? Just "AI" gives me the squicks.

I was looking at how closely related I am to various famous people on FamilySearch.org, and discovered that I'm as closely related to Taylor Swift as I am to Michelle Obama. (10th cousin once removed)

Not sure what I should take from that.

Finishing up the Vikings series.
(A co-production between Canada & Ireland)

Historical fiction but still some good depictions of the harsh world of Europe 700s-800s.

BTW I'm the 36th great grandaughter of King Bjorn Ironside Ragnarsson.

Would I like my viking ancestors -- so dirty, so religious, so rough? But so wildly adventurous, bold, sea-faring?

I was thrilled to visit the Draken Harald Harfage when it moored in Montreal.

Any suggestions on f/oss apps that run on #linux are welcome. As well as how to go about digging into the unknown parts of my family history. I'm sure there are #geneaology nerds floating around Masto (we got plenty of other nerds here, so I know I'm in good company). I look forward to hearing from you.

Started going down the #geneaology rabbit hole today. My grandmother (mother's side) had done a lot of work before she passed away over a decade ago. My mother gave me a set of floppy disks and an original copy of the software she had been using: Family Tree Maker 3.0. New job got me access to a USB floppy drive and finally gave me a chance to look at the disks. I was able to recover all the data files plus the install files for FTM. Now to parse that data and process it with f/oss software.

Watching "Finding Your Roots" with Marisol and noticed that Charlemagne came up in Sharon Stone's paper trail. Reminded me that, whilst it can be hard to find the paper trail to demonstrate how someone of European descent is descended from him, if you have European ancestry then you are descended from him. As well as anyone else who lived then or earlier who has descendants alive today.

The various genetic isopoints are a mind-bender. 🙂

@michael Cool. Straight paternal line? No matter what, #Geneaology is always interesting, I find. Bavarian family coat of arms and their history have partly been digitized. You can find more info eg in the Bavarian state library. See eg this for links: https://www.rambow.de/wappenbuch-sammlungen.html One link directly caught my eye, but you need to read german: 15th century family coat of arms from Swabia and Franconia, among others: https://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/bsb00001650/images/index.html?seite=1 But then, you may already have been devouring this content. Enjoy.
