On Friday, the government ordered #Anthropic to cut off both of its most capable models, #Fable5 and #mythos5, from every foreign national, including some of its own employees. Anthropic said the only way to comply in time was to disable access for all customers. The question to ask now is who gets to throw a switch like that and based on what evidence—what did Friday actually buy us?

Not safety, that’s for sure ...

Mythos and Fable can make us all safer. Shutting them down is reckless

Opinion: Mozilla chief technology officer Raffi Krikorian argues that locking down the most powerful AI models doesn’t make us safer, it just demonstrates who is in control

AI Bans Just Got Way More Terrifying: What Happens When They Come For The Platforms You Actually Depend On

So I have been thinking. And the more I think about it, the more I realize that what I wrote about before, as serious as I believe it was and as seriously as I stand behind every word of it, did not go far enough. Because I have had a realization since then that has genuinely unsettled me in a way that I want to share with you. The AI bans are worse than I thought. Not just a little worse. Significantly, fundamentally, potentially catastrophically worse. And the reason comes down to something […]

AI Bans Are Here. I Told You So. Now Let’s Talk About Why This Is Bad.

I said it before. I said it on this very blog, on Interfaith Intrepid, back when folks were still treating artificial intelligence like it was some kind of science fiction novelty that only tech bros in San Francisco cared about. I said that the AI bans were coming, and I said that they were not going to look the way people thought they were going to look. They were not going to be principled stands against corporate overreach or thoughtful regulatory frameworks designed to protect everyday […]

Freedom of movement is definitely a good thing, but so is freedom of speech. This law in Northern Ireland fines anyone for "influencing" others seeking reproductive services within 100 meters of providers. This apparently includes speech unrelated to reproductive care. Such a precedent, if allowed to stand, would render conduct of millions of law-abiding Britons a misdemeanor.

Retired pastor faces trial under U.K. speech laws for preaching John 3:16 near hospital

Despite not mentioning abortion in his sermon, Clive Johnston is being charged for trying to "influence" people not to go through with the procedure.

Stop S08102A: How New York’s Proposed Digital ID Bill Threatens Privacy and the Internet

The internet has long been one of humanity’s most dynamic spaces, a place where creativity, connection, and information flow freely across borders and boundaries. For decades, it has thrived on decentralization, anonymity, and the ability for individuals to interact without constant oversight. But now, with New York’s proposed bill S08102A, that freedom is under serious threat. This is not a minor tweak or a simple safety measure. It is a sweeping, invasive attempt to embed a device-level […]

In the UK, a law has been tabled that will criminalise "incest simulation" porn. You might not see the harm in this, considering the taboo nature of the subject, but the ban is a notable escalation in a trend of censorship and government overreach occurring in the UK and beyond that *will* harm those it claims to protect.

Lobbying efforts are going insane with fear that #3DPrinting will replace big box hardware chains like #HomeDepot and #Lowe's. They're trying anything to stop the technology, including direct #Protectionism and bizarre arguments about national security.

Politicians consider Soviet-style controls on 3D printers

U.S. politicians' attempts to ban or control 3D printed guns will be just as unsuccessful as Soviet attempts to restrict photocopiers.
