Tonight's mostly a hodge podge

Bazaar - https://github.com/kolunmi/bazaar
App "store" for Linux, specifically focused on flatpaks. It does a great job improving discoverability and also makes donation links for the apps you find there much more visible.

F-droid - https://floss.social/@fdroidorg
App store for android focused on FOSS apps. One fantastic alternative to the google play store.

Obtainium - https://obtainium.imranr.dev/

Media consumption

NewPipe - https://newpipe.net/
Android app frontend for various audio and video streaming services, but I use it pretty exclusively for YouTube. It blocks all ads! I couldn't YouTube without it!

AntennaPod - https://fosstodon.org/@AntennaPod
Podcast app for Android. I listen to a good number of podcasts these days and this app handles things beautifully. It is able to sync with gPodder, too.

Jellyfin - https://jellyfin.org/
Open source alternative to Plex. I run the server on Linux and there are clients available for basically everything, as well as a web client.

VLC media player - https://floss.social/@videolan
#FOSS video player that's been around for *ages*. Usage can be very simple, but it has tons of customizability. It is able to play seemingly any video or audio file you can throw at it!

Data sync/transfer stuff!

LocalSend - https://localsend.org/
Local network file transfers. Super simple. No accounts. Available for most platforms, but also a webapp is in beta so no install necessary, theoretically.

Nextcloud - https://mastodon.xyz/@nextcloud
Self-hosted cloud data server. The backbone of my mobile cloud, this was my first install when finally trying to move away from google. I use this through NextcloudPi, but it is also available through DietPi and numerous other install methods.

DAVx^5 - https://fosstodon.org/@davx5app
CalDav, CardDav, etc sync. I keep all my contacts and calendar events hosted on my Nextcloud, so this keeps my phone up-to-date with that.

Joplin - https://joplinapp.org/
Note taking tool. I have it set up to backup my notes on my Nextcloud automatically. Works like a charm!

Floccus Bookmark Sync - https://fosstodon.org/@floccus
Browser extension for syncing your bookmarks with a cloud service. I, of course, use Nextcloud for mine.

Social apps!

Moshidon - https://floss.social/@moshidon
#Mastodon needs no introduction, but how about my specific app of choice? I've been using Moshidon for quite some time. It's speedy, visually appealing, and it has been largely bug-free. I check out other apps ocassionally, especially for features Moshidon doesn't yet support, but I always end up back here. The developer has a major new release coming right around the corner that, I believe, includes a full code rewrite! Can't wait to try it out!

Signal - https://mastodon.world/@signalapp
It's more important than ever to have secure, private communications. There are a good number of products offering E2EE chat, but Signal has been the most dependable for me. It has been the easiest, by far, (but still not "easy") to get friends to join me on and the clients are open source. I believe some of their server software is still closed source, unfortunately, but I trust their encryption, it's free, and it's easy to use.

#FreeSoftwareHanukkah night 3

Tonight's focus is privacy, with 3 of my most valuable tools in that endeavor.

Pi-hole - https://pi-hole.net/
This is basically the backbone of my home network. It's set up to provide DNS to all devices connected to my wifi so we get ad/malware blocking, along with additional privacy focused blocking, regardless of the capabilities of the device itself. It was a very easy installation using DietPi and it has largely been set-and-forget!

uBlock Origin - https://ublockorigin.com/ - Browser-based ad-blocker I would highly recommend to everyone. My mom actuallymanaged to install it all on her own and even raves about it unprompted when we chat sometimes! Even running behind the pi-hole on my home network, it catches things my pi-hole doesn't. It's also a lot easier to temporarily disable when necessary since it runs right there where you're already browsing.

#FreeSoftwareHanukkah night 2

More and more websites/services are requiring accounts these days, so account security is more important than ever. For this seconds night of Hanukkah, here are two vital pieces of my account security system.

Bitwarden - @bitwarden
Bitwarden is my chosen password manager. It's open source and accessible through the website or one of the various desktop, browser, or mobile apps. It has a solid password generator. I've been considering self-hosting an alternative server, like VaultWarden, but I need to seriously up my server expertise before moving something so vital away from a professionally managed service.

Aegis Authenticator - https://getaegis.app/
My current favorite additional security measure is TOTP 2fa. Aegis does a great job storing all my TOTP keys on my phone and since they're local only, there's very little exposure risk. That being said, I do utilize Aegis' automatic backup feature to create regular backups I can store elsewhere.

I'm giving you a twofer for this first night's candle since these apps fill identical roles but on different platforms.

Librewolf/Ironfox - https://librewolf.net/ & https://github.com/ironfox-oss/IronFox
#LibreWolf (for desktop) and #IronFox (for Android) are both soft forks of #Firefox, focused on privacy and security improvements. While Firefox has been the basis for my web browsers of choice for nearly all of my life, they've been making some really horrendous decisions in recent years. I still believe in the importance of supporting the "underdog" browser engine and only open engine that stands a fighting chance against Google's Chromium, so I'm glad to have these options to mitigate Firefox's own issues as much as possible. At least until someone comes up with a new open browser engine, controlled by neither Google nor Firefox.

One of them's also on fedi!

LibreWolf Browser

A custom version of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom.

Instead of #FreeSoftwareAdvent, I'm going to do #FreeSoftwareHanukkah. Tonight is the first night of #Hanukkah, so let's get started!

It may seem strange, but I'm actually going to start with a piece of software to represent the Shamash candle. The Shamash candle of Hanukkah, as I understand it, is the helper candle, the one used to light all the other, and #Linux just seemed like too obvious a parallel to ignore.

Linux - https://kernel.org
Linux drives so much of our daily lives, whether we know it or not. Most of the internet depends on Linux, either directly as sites or services running on Linux or indirectly by depending on such. Linux comes in an ever growing multitude of flavors because people are free to create their own version catering to their specific whims. It is the ultimate driving factor behind nearly every other piece of software I'm going to talk about, so Linux is my Shamash candle.
