In the backyard.

Watching a #flicker grabbing a bunch of suet from the feeder. Usual habit. It grabs some and the goes to a nearby tree and stashes some/all under the bark.

Then a couple of #nuthatches fly over to the same spot and start digging out the flicker's stash.

Then the flicker comes and chases them off.

Quite amusing to watch.

So I'm sitting at my desk, zoning out, absent-mindedly watching a northern #flicker work on the suet feeder outside my window, and I notice something odd.

He's got black mustache. He's got a red spot at the nape of his neck. Then, when he finally takes off, there's a flash of yellow.

Reader, I am in #Eugene, #Oregon. West of the Rockies. Fifty miles from the Pacific Ocean. This is solidly red-shafted flicker country.
